Membership with a different flavor… it is more like a partnership… it’s even more like a family.
In a few weeks (March 26th, 12 noon till 2 pm), we will be offering a ‘membership cornerstone/seminar/class’ for anybody that would like to consider becoming an “official” member of Quest. Let me throw out a few thoughts for you to chew on concerning ‘membership’:
- First, membership is not like belonging to the local country club, where you pay your dues and can participate when and if you would like. Membership at Quest means you want to actually be a functioning and active participant in the life of the church, the body of the church, the body of Christ. There are a few unique things that membership provides you. The most important element is the right to vote on the handful of things the agreed upon operating guidelines (our Constitution and By-Laws) reserve for members. Your voice and vote matters, as this church is not a dictatorship for the Lead Pastor.
- Non-members (at Quest) can be fully involved in the ministries, but need to recognize that voting is reserved for members… since membership is a statement of commitment to sticking together through thick and thin, like families do.
- Some churches require adherence to a doctrinal statement that is hundreds of pages long. Others have no real theological guidelines at all. We have, what we consider, the basics (10 points) with lots of grace on the non-essentials. We want membership to mean something special as to the connections we all affirm to and for one another. Seasons of involvement wax and wane over the years, but the heart felt commitment does not change.
- Our ‘membership cornerstone’ is a two hour experience that will give you a good understanding of both the historical background of the Evangelical Free Church of America as well as the history of Quest. The class will give you a clear understanding of how we have agreed to govern ourselves and function together.
